Congregational Singing as a Tool For Teaching Christian Faith to Children at Home

Abstract

The growth of Christian faith within the family context remains a significant challenge for churches in Indonesia, particularly as family worship practices have not yet become firmly established in most Christian households. Scripture clearly affirms that parents bear the primary responsibility for their children’s faith education; however, in practice this role is often not carried out optimally. This study aims to examine congregational singing as a pedagogical-theological medium for teaching Christian faith to children, especially when consciously integrated into family worship practices by parents. Employing a qualitative approach through library research and textual analysis, this study includes theological reflection on biblical texts and a musicological-theological analysis of three congregational hymns: Jesus Loves Me, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, and Nothing but the Blood of Jesus. The findings indicate that musical simplicity characterized by a narrow vocal range, simple melodic structure, and stable, repetitive rhythmic patterns constitutes a pedagogical strength that supports the repeated and consistent internalization of faith within the family setting. Theologically, these hymns convey essential and complementary Christian teachings, including the love of Christ, salvation, prayer, consolation, and eschatological hope. This study concludes that integrating congregational singing with the parental role as faith educators, as emphasized in Deuteronomy 6:7–9, forms a contextual, participatory, and sustainable model of family faith formation that supports the spiritual growth of children in Indonesia.
